bhai duj images Bhai Dooj is one of the most prominent Hindu festivals of India which celebrates the bond between a sister and a brother. On this day, sisters pray for the longevity and good fortune of their brothers and this year, Bhai Dooj will fall on October 21, Saturday. For the ceremonies, the sisters practise a puja and perform a tika on their brothers and in exchange get gifts from their brothers.
Bhai Dooj is celebrated two days after Diwali and is very similar to Raksha Bandhan as both the festivals celebrate the beautiful bond between siblings. A celebration takes place after the puja rituals, which includes applying vermillion, dahi and rice on the forehead of the brother. Sweets and delicacies are handed around and gifts are exchanged afterwards along with the customary aarti that families perform. The siblings are supposed to touch their elders’ feet to get their blessings.
Long time back, Surya, the sun God, was married to a beautiful princess called Samjna (also prounced as Sangya). In course of a year, she presented Him with twins. The twins were christened Yama, and Varni or Yamuna, and they grew up together.
However, Samjna, after some time, were unable to bear the brilliance of her husband, decided to go back to earth. However, she left her shadow, Chaya, her exact replica, behind, so that to Surya, it would appear that she is still there. However, Chhaya turned out to be a cruel stepmother and was very unkind to the twins. She soon gave birth to her own children, and convinced Surya to drive out Samjna’s twins from the heaven. Varni fell to earth and became the river Yamuna, and Yama went to the underworld (hell) and became the King of Death.
Years passed. Varni married a handsome prince and was haapy in her life but she missed her brother wanted to see him. Yama, too, missed his sister and decided one day to visit her.
After hearing the news of her brother's visit, Varni prepared a great feast in his honor. It was two days after Deepavali, so her home was already decorated. Yama, too, was delighted by his sister's loving welcome, and brother and sister spent a pleasant evening in each other's company, after their long period of separation.
When it was time for Yama to return to his kingdom in hell, he turned to his sister and said, "Dear Varni, you have welcomed me so lovingly. But I did not bring you a gift. Ask, therefore, for something and it will be yours." So inreturn Varni asked from him that all brothers should remember their sisters on this day and visit them if they can, and that, on this day, all sisters should pray for the happiness of their brothers. This is how the custom of Bhai-duj, or bhai-phonta, came into practice.
Another myth for celebrating this occassion is that on this day Lord Krishna, after assassinating the Narakasura demon, goes to his sister Subhadra who welcomes him with the lamp, flowers and sweets, and mark his forehead with holy protective spot.
Bhai Duj is celebrated also because on this day Bhagawaan Mahavir found nirvana, his brother Raja Nandivardhan was distressed because he missed him and was comforted by his sister Sudarshana. Since then, women have been revered during this festival.

Bhai Dooj or Bhaiya Dooj is a Hindu festival that is celebrated by all women by praying for the long life of their brothers and in return receive gifts. The festival is celebrated on the very last day of the 5 days long Diwali festival which is the second day of the bright fortnight or Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Kartik.
Legend has it that as per the Hindu mythology, after defeating the evil demon Narakasura, Lord Krishna paid a visit to his sister Subhadra who gave him a warm welcome with sweets and flowers. She applied tilaka on Krishna's forehead with affection. It is believed by some that this is the origin of the festival. However, Legend has it that on this particular day, Yama, the God of Death visited his sister, Yami. She put tilak on her brother Yama's forehead, garlanded him and fed him special dishes that she cooked herself. Since they were meeting each other after a long time, they dined together and talked to each other to their heart's content. They also exchanged gifts to each other and Yami had made the gift with her own hands. Yama then announced that whoever receives tilak from his sister on this particular day will enjoy long life and prosperity. Based on this, Bhai Dooj is also known as Yama Dwitiya.
Bhai Dooj is celebrated by the invitations of the brothers by the sisters for specially made scrumptious meals that include their most relished dishes. The ceremony is about the brother's responsibility to protect his sister along with the blessings of the sister. It is a very traditionally celebrated ceremony where the sisters ensure to perform aarti of their brothers and apply red tika on their forehead. The tika ceremony on the occasion of Bhai Dooj signifies the prayers of a sister for the long life and prosperous accumulation of her brother. In return, the brother gives gifts which may also be in form of monetary terms. In certain parts of India, women who do not have a brother worship, Lord Moon, instead. As a tradition, they apply Mehendi (henna) on their hands as a tradition. At different places, Bhai Dooj festival is celebrated in different ways. In Haryana, Bhai Phota is celebrated with high energy and fervour. There are numerous rituals conducted during the ceremony that also includes that grand feast for the brothers. On this particular day, the brothers visit their sister's home and the ceremony begins with an Aarti. A tradition is followed on Bhai Dooj where the coconuts are also worshipped and presented to the brother by the sister. The sister then goes on to apply tilak on her brother's forehead and feed him handmade tasty savouries. She also gives her brother blessings for a long and content life. As mentioned earlier, this is followed by the exchange of gifts between the brothers and sisters. This festival is quite similar to the festival of Raksha Bandhan. The festival of Bhai Dooj also gives a chance to family members and relatives to meet each other and spend some great time together till their heart is content.
