difference between bhai dooj and rakhi

difference between bhai dooj and rakhi

Are there similar festivals like “Raksha bandhan” & “Bhai Dooj” elsewhere in this world apart from India?

Yes,there is similar festival in andhra pradesh ,which is known as “Anna-Chelli Pasumkalam”.This festival falls on third or fourth day after Diwali. On this day sister cooks food for her brother and serves him with love and effection.brother gifts her something and blesses his sister.Main purpoose of this festival is to build up a strong bond between brother and sister, forever.Brother also promises to protect her and be with her during hard times.
Though I don’t know about outside India, but Yes there is elsewhere within Inida itself which is very similar but celebrated on a different day of the year. In parts of Karnataka there is a festival called ‘Bheemana Amavasya’ or ‘Jyothir Bheemeshwara Vrata’.
Celebrated on the Amavasya ending the month of Aashada, it is a Vrata by ladies in reverence of Bheemeshwara or Lord Shiva, for praying the longevity and prosperity of their husband/future husband.
One of the important rituals of the day however, involves the lady and her brother(s). The brother is made to sit on the plank of main door of the house and break open a dish/item called Bhandara (made of sweet aata and usually a token coin or money inside it) by his elbow. Once broken, the sister then does aarthi and tilak to the brother after which he takes the money in the bhandara for himself. In return the brother too gives a gift to the sister, this could be mostly practiced outside of ritual to celebrate the bonding between brother and sister.
This is very similar to Raksha Bhandhan and equally revered in Karnataka, since it comes almost the same time of the year (Raksha Bhandhan is fifteen days later to Bheemana Amavasya, on the new moon of Sharavana)]
There is “Siblings Day” and “Sisters Day” celebrated in US every year (August month), though its only in only few parts of states and not entirely. Its not like how we celebrate back in India but its very much close to Rakshabandhan.
